Last week the DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E) issued a $150M funding opportunity open to all transformational energy technologies. This is the first “Open” FOA issued by ARPA-E since 2009 and has attracted a lot of interest among our newsletter subscriber base. I have summarized the two opportunities currently available from the agency below. Concept papers and letters of intent are due at the end of the month. Federal Solicitations- $120M Battery & Energy Storage FOA

I want to alert everyone to a fantastic opportunity that came out a couple of weeks ago. The DOE launched a new Innovation Hub FOA earlier this February. With total program allocations up to $120M for 5 years, companies and Universities conducting basic research in batteries and energy storage should strongly consider applying. DOE SunsShot Incubator Program

This week, the DOE announced that over $12 million is being made available to help speed solar energy innovation from the lab to the marketplace. The SunShot Incubator Program, part of the larger DOE SunShot Initiative that aims to reduce the installed costs of solar energy systems, will facilitate American small business transitions from a proof of concept or business plan to domestic commercialization or deployment of solar technology. If you have a well-developed technology and are trying to secure funding, it is absolutely crucial that you meet with agency project managers. What can occur from this meeting? If the agencies see value, they can help guide you to an established or upcoming program that is in alignment with your technology. Our friends at ESTCP contacted us to make sure that everyone knew about the BAA that was released last week. The Department of Defense (DoD), through the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), supports the demonstration of technologies that address priority DoD environmental requirements. The goal of ESTCP is to promote the transfer of innovative environmental technologies through demonstrations that collect the data needed for regulatory and DoD end-user acceptance. Read more

I also spent some time analyzing what the climate for federal R&D spending will be in 2012.
