Department of Energy Awards Nearly $7 Million to Advance Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Storage Systems Research

(DOE, August 09, 2011) The U.S. Department of Energy today announced nearly $7 million over five years for independent cost analyses that will support research and development efforts for fuel cells and hydrogen storage systems. The four projects – in California, Ohio, and Virginia – will generate rigorous cost estimates for manufacturing equipment, labor, energy, raw materials, and various components that will help identify ways to drive down production costs of transportation fuel cell systems, stationary fuel cell systems, and hydrogen storage systems. These projects will provide important data that will help the Department focus future research and development funding on the fuel cell components and manufacturing processes that can deliver the greatest gains in efficiency. Department of Energy to Award Over $6 Million for Clean Energy Projects on Tribal Lands

(DOE July 21, 2011) U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced 31 tribal energy projects to receive $6.3 million over two years as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s ongoing efforts to support tribal energy development and continue strengthening the partnership with Tribal Nations. These competitively selected projects will allow Native American Tribes to advance clean energy within their communities by developing strategic energy plans, expanding the skills and knowledge of tribal members, and improving the energy efficiency of their buildings. HP Wins $1.1B Government Contract

(Austin Business Journal, July 25, 2011) HP Enterprise Services, a division of Hewlett-Packard Co Hewlett-Packard Co , said Monday it was picked for a $1.1 billion U.S. Department of Justice contract to provide information technology support services. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company (NYSE:HPQ), which has a significant Austin presence, said its enterprise services division is one of 20 companies that competed for the task. Departments of Energy, Defense Partner to Install Fuel Cell Backup Power Units at Eight Military Installations

(EERE News, July 19, 2011) The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that as part of an interagency partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to strengthen American energy security and develop new clean energy technologies, DOD will be installing and operating 18 fuel cell backup power systems at eight military installations across the country. The Departments will test how the fuel cells perform in real world operations, identify any technical improvements manufacturers could make to enhance performance, and highlight the benefits of fuel cells for emergency backup power applications. Award is a firm-fixed-price indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract with a maximum $660,000,000 for the maintenance, repair, and operations prime vendor for zone one of the South Central region. There are no other locations of performance. Using services are Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and federal civilian agencies. The date of performance completion is July 28, 2012. Mexico Wins $2.5B Investment in New Wind Farms

(Reuters, July 7, 2011) Mexico announced on Thursday a $2.5 billion investment in new wind farms to generate more than 300 MW of electricity across the country, part of the government’s push to expand renewable energy. San Diego-based Cannon Power Group, which already works in the Baja California peninsula, will build another project there along with a plant in the central state of Zacatecas and in southern Quintana Roo, home to popular tourist resort Cancun. (EERE, June 10, 2011) As part of the Obama Administration’s efforts to cut foreign oil imports, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu today announced up to $36 million to fund six small-scale projects in California, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin, that will advance the technology improvements and process integration needed to produce drop-in advanced biofuels and other valuable bio-based chemicals. The projects aim to improve the economics and efficiency of biological and chemical processes that convert non-food biomass feedstocks into replacements for petroleum-based feedstocks, products, and fuels.
