Research and Technology Development to Support Crew Health and Performance in Space Exploration Missions – The goal of the HRP is to provide human health and performance countermeasures, knowledge, technologies, and tools to enable safe, reliable, and productive human space exploration. The scope of this goal includes both the successful completion of exploration missions and the preservation of astronaut health over the life of the astronaut. Specific objectives in support of this goal are: 1) Quantification of the crew health and performance risks associated with human spaceflight for the various exploration missions; 2) Development of countermeasures to provide mission planners and system developers with strategies for mitigating crew health and performance risks; 3) Development of technologies to provide mission planners and system developers with strategies for monitoring and mitigating crew health and performance risks. This NRA solicits research for NASA and the NSBRI that addresses at least one of these objectives. Award Ceiling: $450K/yr. Read more

Environmental Research Apprenticeship Program for Pre-Baccalaureate College Students – This Request for Applications (RFA) seeks institutions of higher education and other non-profit organizations to implement an apprenticeship program for up to 15 pre-baccalaureate college students. This program provides undergraduate students with year-round research opportunities that allow students to relate hands-on research experience with formal academic studies. It also provides invaluable experience regarding the relevance of academic training to the conduct of research. It is intended that the research experience be gained through a mentoring relationship with a Senior Ground Water and Ecosystem Restoration Division (GWERD) scientist working in a fully operational federal research laboratory. This program provides direct benefit to the academic community and the general public by increasing both the effectiveness and pool of available environmental scientists for the future. Total Funding: $500K. Read more

Design and Implement a System for Archiving and Disseminating Data for SHRP 2 – To address the challenges of moving people and goods efficiently and safely on the nation’s highways, Congress has created the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2). SHRP 2 is a targeted, short-term research program carried out through competitively awarded contracts to qualified researchers in the academic, private, and public sectors. The major objective of SHRP 2 Reliability research is to greatly improve the reliability of highway travel times by reducing the frequency and effects of events that cause travel times to fluctuate in an unpredictable manner. The results of the research program should help local, state, and national agencies reduce travel time variability for travelers and shippers. Total Funding: $1.475M. Proposal Due Date: September 27, 2010.

Statement By The Press Secretary On Transparency In The Energy Sector

(White House, July 23, 2010) The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which President Obama signed earlier this week, includes a landmark provision that requires energy and mining companies registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to disclose how much they pay to foreign countries and the U.S. government for oil, gas, and minerals. This provision is an essential new tool in promoting transparency in the oil and mineral sectors. This legislation will immediately shed light on billions in payments between multinational corporations and governments, giving citizens the information they need to monitor companies and to hold governments accountable. It will shine a sustained light on the relationship between corporations and governments in the oil and mineral sectors, and make impossible the kind of back-room dealings that cost taxpayers in lost royalties. (R&D Daily, July 22, 2010) From Tolkien’s ring of power in The Lord of the Rings to Star Trek’s Romulans, who could make their warships disappear from view, from Harry Potter’s magical cloak to the garment that makes players vanish in the video game classic “Dungeons and Dragons, the power to turn someone or something invisible has fascinated mankind. But who ever thought that a scientist at Michigan Technological University would be serious about building a working invisibility cloak? That’s exactly what Elena Semouchkina, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan Tech, is doing. She has found ways to use magnetic resonance to capture rays of visible light and route them around objects, rendering those objects invisible to the human eye. Click here to read more…

(DOE, July 22, 2010) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $5.6 million for emerging technologies projects as part of a summer-long roll out of $120 million in clean diesel grants. The awards will provide opportunities to advance cutting-edge technologies in the marketplace, and support both environmental innovation and green jobs to reduce diesel emissions. Diesel pollution is linked to thousands of premature deaths, hundreds of thousands of asthma attacks and millions of lost work days. “EPA is promoting innovations that will not only create jobs, but also keep dangerous pollution out of the air we breathe,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “We’re playing to America’s strengths of ingenuity and invention to improve the future of our economy, our health and our environment.” Click here to read more…
