Research Opportunities in Fundamental Physics — Last century’s major scientific insights represented by the theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics are known to be mutually incompatible. The lack of a theory to unify all natural forces including gravity indicates the incompleteness of the Standard Model and General Relativity. In addition, there is clear evidence for dark energy and dark matter from astrophysical observations. While NASA’s Science Mission Directorate plans to study dark matter and dark energy through observational means, and to seek clues to when General Relativity might fail through studies of physics in the strong gravity environment near black holes, the establishment of new physical understanding beyond current known theories remains elusive. Sources Sought: Shaft Life Investments — This RFI is for planning purposes only and shall not be construed as a RFPor as an obligation on the part of NRL to acquire any product or services. An Industry Day will be held on Tuesday October 13, 2011 to provide additional information and discussion on this topic. The main propulsion shaft is a critical component of a Navy ship; mobility is a key mission profile requirement. Propulsion shafts represent a single point of failure; even on multiple shaft ships, all shafts are needed for full power and maneuverability. The removal and inspection of the main propulsion shaft requires drydocking of the ship. Read more

Sources Sought: State of the Art Tools for High-Speed Vehicle Design — AFRL/RB is identifying gaps in analytical capability within its own organization when considering the design and analysis of high-speed flight vehicles (access-to-space, long-duration/high-Mach cruise, boost-glide, etc). There is a recognized need to be able to perform certain types of analyses in-house but there are concerns that the appropriate computational tools may not be in place to support those analyses. In addition, there is a strong desire to identify current and anticipated capability so as to be able to focus future tool and methodology development funding towards high-payoff activities.
