Emergency Medical Services for Children National Resource Center – The Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) award program is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB). This Federal initiative evolved out of a growing recognition that children have unique needs in emergency situations — needs that often vary from those of adults due to physiological, developmental and psychological differences. The goal of the EMSC program is to reduce child and youth mortality and morbidity sustained as a result of severe illness or trauma. The EMSC program does not intend to promote the development of a separate EMS system for children, but rather to enhance the pediatric capability of EMS systems originally designed primarily for adults. Total Funding: $1.86M. Eligibility: Accredited Schools of Medicine. Application Deadline: January 14, 2011. Read more

Women and Sex/Gender Differences in Drug and Alcohol Abuse/Dependence (R01) – The purpose of this FOA issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is to advance research on male-females differences in drug and alcohol abuse and addiction and on factors specific to women. Both human and animal model studies are sought. Areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) Etiology and Mechanisms of Drug Abuse – Study sex/gender differences in the basic behavioral and biological mechanisms underlying drug abuse and dependence across the lifespan; and conduct laboratory, epidemiological, and clinical studies of male-female differences in the determinants of initiation, progression, and maintenance of drug use and dependence; Read more

Controlling Cellular Machinery – Diagnostics and Therapeutics – DARPA is soliciting research proposals for the development of synthetic regulatory genetic elements that can be used in mammalian cells. The proposed research should comprise approaches that enable fundamental advances to the development and broad application of synthetic regulatory elements for in vivo biomedical applications to detect, treat, or prevent disease. Technical challenges that need to be addressed include, but are not limited to, discovery, characterization, evolution or design, and demonstration of orthogonal and modular genetic regulatory elements; construct stability and function in the cell; and synthesis, amplification, and delivery of novel circuits in mammalian cells. The designed modules must limit specific interactions with the cellular metabolism or milieu to the desired performance characteristics and demonstrate maintenance of independent function without interference long enough to achieve the intended clinical effect. Maternal Vitamin D Status and Preterm Birth – This FOA will enable CDC to fund public health partners to conduct research that has the potential to have a significant impact on disparities in preterm birth and to reduce the overall health burden associated with this condition. Research will focus on improving the scientific understanding of the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and preterm birth among racially and ethnically diverse women. Results can inform the development of interventions, which could lead to the prevention of large numbers of preterm births and thereby decrease the nation’s infant mortality rate. Total Funding: $1.3M. Read more

(Benzinga, November 8, 2010) ADA Technologies, Inc. received a $100,000 contract from the U.S. Air Force for Phase I research into the development of improved thermal interface materials (TIM) for use in microchips. Thermal management is a limiting factor in further reduction of microchip size, as well as in the design of more complicated circuits for a variety of applications, including solid state tactical lasers, non-lethal denial technologies, and power metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). ADA’s research focuses on developing uniquely treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in a polymer. The research addresses the challenge of interfacial resistance between CNTs and mating surfaces, resulting in higher performing and lower cost TIMs, in comparison to current state-of-the-art.
