Manufacturers See Brighter 2010

(Dayton Business Journal, December 21, 2009) Next year should be better than this year for manufacturing businesses, but the biggest problem facing many companies is the uncertainty about the role government will play in the economy, according to a new industry association report. Governmental action in 2010 is hard to predict and could bring a mix of good and bad news for manufacturers, said Chris Kuehl, economic analyst for the Rockford, Ill.-based Fabricators and Manufacturers Association International. Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., Stratford, Conn., is being awarded a $163,800,000 not-to-exceed undefinitized contract action for the procurement of four S-70B anti-submarine warfare/anti-surface warfare aircraft for the government of Brazil under the foreign military sales program.  This effort includes associated non-recurring engineering, production and transportation.  Work will be performed in Stratford, Conn. Stimulus Puts U.S. Renewable Energy Generation On Track To Double By 2012

(Kansas City Business Journal, December 21, 2009)  Because of investments made through the economic stimulus bill, the United States is on track to double renewable energy generation by 2012, according to a report by Vice President Joe Biden. The nation also will double its capacity to manufacture wind turbines, solar panels and other clean energy components in three years, according to the report. President Obama said the report “confirms that as a result of the steps we’ve taken, a major transformation of our economy is well under way.” Read more

Oregon Gets $2.1 Million For Broadband

(Portland Business Journal, December 22, 2009) Oregon, a state in which public officials have long lobbied for publicly administered broadband systems, has collected federal Internet cash. The $2.1 million comes from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds distributed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The federal group hopes to increase broadband access and adoption through better data collection and broadband planning. Oregon was one of 15 states that received the stimulus funds. Read more

Minnesota Gets $1.5M In Stimulus Cash For Broadband Mapping

(Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal, December 22, 2009) The federal government will spend $1.5 million in economic stimulus cash to map out access to broadband services in Minnesota, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration said Tuesday. The money, which will be spent in Minnesota by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Connected Nation, is part of more than $27 million going to 14 states and Puerto Rico. Connected Nation is listed as the designated entity for three of those states. Read more

Agriculture Secretary Vilsak Announces $116 Million For Rural Water Projects

(USDA, December 29, 2009) WASHINGTON, December 29, 2009 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the selection of $116.9 million in water and environmental project loans and grants that are being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Altogether, USDA has announced $ 2.08 billion for Recovery Act water and environmental project loans and grants, benefiting people throughout the country.  “Recovery Act projects are helping rural communities of all sizes build a foundation for economic strength, future prosperity, and a healthy environment,” said Vilsack. “The projects we’re announcing today will help create jobs while rebuilding America’s infrastructure.” Read more

Alliances for Broadening Participation in STEM– solicitation includes the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program, Bridge to the Doctorate (LSAMP-BD) Activity, LSAMP educational research projects, and the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program. This portfolio of programs seeks to increase the number of students successfully completing quality degree programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Particular emphasis is placed on transforming STEM education through innovative academic strategies and experiences in support of groups that historically have been underrepresented in STEM disciplines: African-Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Pacific Islanders.
